Os escaleres inicialmente eram usados para servi\u00E7os leves no porto e \"salva mares\", as baleieiras a motor em liga\u00E7\u00E3o de navios, no caso de cabos de abastecimento, quando n\u00E3o cabe o chamado \"tiro de liga\u00E7\u00E3o e salva\", possuindo um casco constru\u00EDdo de madeira em um tipo de constru\u00E7\u00E3o chamado de costado trincado, com as t\u00E1buas de madeira sendo colocadas sobrepostas umas as outras. Nos dias atuais, os escaleres tem sido constru\u00EDdos na forma de costado liso, sendo em sua maioria constru\u00EDdos em fibra de vidro, sendo que geralmente os escaleres tem as cores do navio e as baleieiras na cor p\u00FArpura para melhor localiza\u00E7\u00E3o.
